More than 170 Nebraska schools currently offer NASP for their 4-12 grade students. Each year more than 21,000 Nebraska students participate in a NASP course in their math, history or physical education class and the program continues to expand.

NASP is a nationally acclaimed program that provides training and certification for teachers to teach target-style basic archery instruction in their school gymnasium using the NASP school archery kit. One-day teacher training workshops and equipment grants are provided by the Commission to assist schools in teaching Nebraska students a safe and enjoyable life skill.

NASP’s many benefits include:

  • 50/50 gender participation.
  • Enhanced self esteem of participants.
  • Enhanced enjoyment of the PE class.
  • Everyone can participate – including physically impaired or disabled.
  • Students learn respect and patience.
  • Enhanced motor skills and develop self confidence.

Improved attendance and lower drop-out numbers are also common results of program participation.

Grants for equipment are available and the Commission schedules teacher training workshops as needed. Training workshops generally last eight hours and have been incorporated into teacher in-service workshops in many districts. Once completed, teachers receive national certification to teach basic target archery.

The Commission also supports an annual state archery tournament, this year on March 24, 2012 in Lincoln.

In 2011, 425 students from across the state participated to represent their school in the NASP State Tournament. This year's tournament should be the biggest and best yet. Each year several Nebraska schools go onto proudly represent the state while competing in the National NASP Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.
