Roger G. Sykes Outdoor Heritage Education Complex

The Roger G. Sykes Outdoor Heritage Complex is a family-friendly shooting sports complex with a focus on safety and family fun located at Platte River State Park near Lousiville. This center features an archery range with a shooting tower, a 50-yard small bore rifle range, a trap range with 5 stand feature and an indoor 10-meter pellet gun range. The ranges were created with everyone in mind, regardless of size, ability or skill level.

Special events

Upcoming special events at the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex:

Introduction to Shotguns and Trap Shooting, May 11, June 15 and July 13, 2016

Spend an evening on the shotgun range with Nebraska’s own state champion trap coach Les Hlauec. This workshop will include an introduction to shotguns, trap shooting and 5-stand sporting clays. This workshop is designed for new and novice shooters.

Rim Fire Steel Plate Fun Shoot, June 11, July 16, August 13, 2016

This event is designed to be an easy, fun, and safe experience for shooters of all ages and experience levels. Instruction will be provided by certified NRA Range Safety Officers and all equipment is provided (.22 Rimfire M&P Sporter rifles, ammunition, eye and ear protection).

The entire family is invited to take part in this fun competition! A typical shooting stage is set up with 5 to 6 steel plates at distances of 20 feet to 30 yards. Participants will shoot one shot on each plate and the time will stop when the last plate is hit. This string of fire will be shot 5 times by each competitor, with the slowest time thrown out.

Introduction to Civilian Marksmenship Program, June 13, 15, July 11, 13, August 22, 24, 2016

During this program participates will learn safe rifle handling and range procedures:

  • Sight picture and sight alignment
  • Rules of competitive shooting
  • Proper sling use
  • Natural Point of Aim
  • Prone, sitting and standing shooting positions

This is a two session class: Students must attend both classes (Monday and Wednesday sessions). They will Shoot a 60 round CMP Rimfire Sporter Match during the second class (Wednesday). This clinic follows Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) rules. Participants are encouraged to bring their own rifle and ammunition but loaners will be available.
.22 LR only. Any action allowed (semi-auto, bolt, pump or lever).

All events take place at Platte River State Park (PRSP). Cost is $15 per person ($20 with loner firearm and ammunition).

Shooting rates

Pellet gun: $3 per person for four rounds (48)
Archery and atlatl throwing: $3 per person for 30 minutes
Sling shot: $3 per basket of ammo
.22 rimfire rifle: $3 per person per for two rounds (20)
Shotgun: $5 per person for one round of 25; $7 per person for one round of 25 with range gun and ammo provided; additional $2 for 5 stand sporting clays
Hatchet throwing: $3 per person per half hour
