Late Season Squirrel…With A Pistol
Squirrel hunting in NE is one of the most underutilized resources the state has to offer and one of my favorite hunts. Squirrels are a blast to hunt (pardon the pun) but sometimes us adults (kid at heart though) feel like squirrels just don’t add up to the thrill of other game. Try it with a handgun!
Squirrel hunting with a pistol has all the excitement and challenge of any big game hunt. I really like single actions (grew up watching too much John Wayne) for their fantastic feel in the hand, ease of carry and challenge of the hunt. A good 22 lr or magnum pistol with loads that are accurate in your gun are perfect. For bullets, I really like hollow points as they tend to really anchor these tough little critters. Blood trailing a squirrel up an oak tree is not ideal. We are well past the mating season but much action can still be had as the season runs through the end of January. Squirrels were made for me as the hunting really picks up around 9am so you can even sleep in! While your at it, squirrel and rabbit are great hunts for youth as they allow for lots of shooting and alllow kids to practice their skills while seeing a good number of game animals. I like a small gauge shotgun for kids as they allow good success on these small targets and a 22 cal. rifle will really allow kids to develop good shooting skills in the woods while learning safe gun handling skills with mom or dad. Get out there and enjoy these last few days and while you have the wheel gun handy, try stocking a few rabbits. You’ll feel like a kid again! Get em’ out there!
