Naming Photos

I’m not a big “name a photo” supporter, and I have two reasons for this. One, naming always seems like it should be related to a work of art. Now, now, now photographers, I know you’re work is art and all, but quite often images are made by being in the right place at the right time, or researching long and hard to get yourself in the right place at the right time.

I would imagine a painter working on an original piece of art has their vision in their head, and is trying as hard as they can to get that vision out of their head. The same way a writer is often kept up at night by a repeated image in their own head. Anything that wears on you that much, much like a small dog brought home from the pet store, must be named something. But photos, I think I just want to know where it came from, and possibly what year it was taken. Besides that, I’m fine with naming it whatever I want to, regardless of whose photo it is. In fact, it personalizes it for me and makes it my own.

The second reason is because I think I’m a demented person. Every time I try to name a photo, the worst possible title interrupts any logical thinking I have, briefly amuses me, and is forever linked to a photograph.

Observe below my psychosis, and you’ll truly understand why I refuse to publically name photos.

    Jeff,
One other reason to hate naming – how do you make sure you give a photo the same name every time? I’ve started adding a fanciful name to the file name in my computer for images I submit but if I had to do that for all my images I’d run out of names pretty quick! Unless people just like seeing Sunset 1, Sunset 2, Sunset 3,….

And like it sounds for you, those really great names usually pop into my head a day or so after submitting the image.
