Outdoor Skills in Schools?
Remember when you were in school? Would it have been pretty cool if you would have learned how to shoot a bow, rifle, pitch a tent, hike and ID wildlife, kayak and use GPS units in your classes? That is exactly what professional educators, curriculum coordinators and teachers from across the Country met in Omaha to discuss this month.
The meeting was developed by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Conservation Education Strategy Outdoor Skills Committee. The group met to discuss barriers and solutions to institutionalizing Outdoor Skills programming in our school Ag Ed. and PE classes. The results were truly awesome. All agree such skills will be well received by kids and such efforts will result in healthy kids adopting healthier lifestyles. I think we are on to something here as we need to find better methods of engaging our Nation’s youth and helping them to incorporate healthy life style decisions into their lives…something that many of the current PE and other skills have had moderate success with. Come to think of it….I climbed that rope in PE but never even thought about it after graduation…I didn’t go out and buy one either!
