Duggan's NEBRASKAland Magazine Article

Take a look at Joe Duggan’s Lincoln Journal-Star article (http://journalstar.com/news/local/article_62f87e4a-b61c-11df-9ec0-001cc4c03286.html) regarding the future of NEBRASKAland Magazine.

I found it quite interesting.

Hmmm…. I admit to reading this blog and looking at the website over having a print subscription. It’s because I got overwhelmed with subscription paper several years ago and had to go cold turkey. Might have to reconsider given this news.

Does this imply the end of the print version means the end of NEBRASKAland magazine? Or just a shift in how the content is provided?

I don’t quite know how to answer this question, although it is a viable one. What wasn’t written in Duggan’s article was that our publication’s numbers have remained more consistent, if not higher, than many other titles in the industry. And while many publications, especially state-funded, have shut down, ours has maintained its quality as well as a dependable subscriber base. What happens with our publication is that people purchase it, pass it on, and then pass it on again. The industry number for how a subscriber base translates to total circulation is usually 4:1, which puts circulation at around 100,000 for a subsciber base our size. However, I would assume that ours is even more. We are a family publication, one that always has a long shelf life regardless of whose shelf it is on. Another factor is that we are not credited if someone reads one of our articles and buys a permit for one of the Commission’s parks, or to hunt or fish. It’s very hard to quantify, and I understand that, but we are so much more than just a subscriber base. I’ve been to at least a dozen fisheries since I’ve been here that I’ve written about and found more people after I wrote pieces about these places than before. It happened just this weekend at Grove Lake. So I know people are reading. Now, how much they’ll read online, I don’t know. What I feel that we can do is continue to provide a great magazine on paper and also provide different content online. That’s the short term plan that I hope carries on to the long term plan.

I was on the fence about subscribing, but this article pushed me to hit the “complete order” button. Nebraskaland is a wonderful resource and showcase for Nebraska. I enjoy the variety of articles and information presented and the photography is outstanding. Here’s to the continued print version!

Thanks a lot, Jennifer. I think we have a lot of “On the Fence” folks who either read a relative’s copy (it’s estimated that with only 23,000 subscribers we still have over 100,000 reading us monthly) or say they’ll subscribe but put it off for one reason or another. Hopefully you enjoy what you start receiving in the mail.
