The January Deer Season True Grit Style

December 21, 2010 Lock, Stock and Bedlam No Comments

For many, deer hunting means sitting in a field in the GQ blaze orange and waiting for a deer to walk by with our trusty rifle.  I like hunting with a rifle but being an archer, I really enjoy hunting that forces me to get closer to deer and the challenge of killing with an arrow.  Understanding that I also crave things that go bang…hunting with a single action revolver has always appealed to me and is a passion of mine.  Maybe it is all those years as a youngster watching John Wayne with Dad.  Those movies undoubtedly had a huge influence on my life and today, I am somewhat of a single action nut.  Heading to the woods with the challenge and limitations of a good 44 or 45 Colt is my idea of perfection.  For the squirrel woods, the single action 22 is just the ticket and something I grew up with.  My first forays with the single action were on my Uncle’s farm under the watchful eye of Dad while I shot cans, sticks, etc.  When I was old enough to wander the woods with my single actions…I felt like I was king of the town.  Today, they still add that challenge I crave and that feel of the old west that each of us knows…just a little.

This January season, try something new and head into the woods after deer with a good single action pistol.  You’ll be hooked and that’s a good thing…pilgrim!
