Love For Late Season Waterfowl
Dave and I had a great opportunity to hunt waterfowl with our father-in-law last weekend on the Platte and man was that a blast. These birds came in on the tail of a larger flock (50+) and through a little coaxing on the flute, they peeled off and circled our decoy spread. A few circles (my heart pounding so loud in the blind I was afraid I would not hear the call to “takem”) and they cupped their wings and began falling from the sky looking down at the landing zone and the decoys. The call to “takem” rang out and we stood, mounted the guns, looked for quality shots in clean zones of fire and the fireworks began. Five birds were claimed and we were thrilled.
For those of you that hunt waterfowl, nothing compares to that final moment when the birds cup their wings for the final descent and commit to landing. Your heart pounds, the excitement builds and then voila! Oh man…I can’t wait until Saturday! But honestly, the best part of the hunt is just spending quality time with family and friends. Dave and my father-in-law always have a great time and really enjoy just getting out together. Can’t wait until the next outing!
