It’s Still On!
…last week over the holidays, I was able to sneak away with a dog or two (ok, three) and do some bird-chasin’ – we all desperately needed the ‘legs-stretched’…I had pre-selected a couple of CRP-MAP areas (you know those private areas in NE that have agreed to allow walk-in hunting?) and made the drive…being that it’s the late season & we don’t have that good, fluffy hunting snow I didn’t have the greatest of expectations - that’s the excuse I’m using for being caught completely off-guard when my 6 month old springer caused the explosion of bobwhites right in front of me, not 100 yards into the first field…with my honed, predator skills I was able to waste two shells on the last, late-riser which made expert use of the low sun and left the scene unscathed…I was better prepared in CRP-MAP field #2 when my little French Brittany hit a hard point and out boiled a rooster pheasant…a second hard point, not even 60 seconds after the first bird was in the pouch, and rooster #2 was in the air…all told I had about 2 1/2 hrs of hunt time between the two fields and got to see a few pheasants and the largest covey of quail I have seen to this point – dang cool!…the moral of the story is: the season is still open so get out there and enjoy it!…
