Last Weekend Ladies Deer Hunt
…spent the final weekend of the 2010/11 deer season with the ladies at Cedar Ridge Deer Camp, near Tobias, NE…this Hunt Camp has become a tradition for the final days of the antlerless season and as always provided some good memories that will fuel the fire for this fall and beyond…though, my main job was to make sure the camp was moving smoothly & get the food ready, I was able to spend some time in the field with Shannon, who is originally from Arkansas, now living in Omaha…as luck would have it she not only got to see deer & coyotes on Saturday morning, but also made an impressive shot on one of those deer – her first since she was 19 years old!…several minutes later another doe presented an almost identical shot as the first – however, thanks to an old spring in her firearm’s magazine, a loud “CLICK” was all that the firing pin made when the trigger was pulled on an empty chamber…that deer doesn’t realize just how lucky it was that early morning!!…
…this Hunt Camp is part of the NGPC’s Beyond BOW (Becoming an Outdoors Woman) Program which is a way to connect like-minded, adult women with opportunities to experience the outdoors in a manner that is fun & personal as they equip themselves with the skills and know-how to be successful – which goes well beyond the harvest…you can check out all the Beyond BOW opportunities at http://www.outdoornebraska.ne.gov/Education/programs/bow/beyondBOW.asp or by getting on the Nebraska BOW Facebook Page…
…being an educational event, once the deer was ‘in-hand’ & the pictures taken, Shannon’s reintroduction to game care began…Christy was up to the challenge and did an impressive job tutoring everyone in field dressing – she even made it look fun!…now Shannon’s hunting style & reasons for hunting may have been quite different back in Arkansas - but I think she is hooked once again…she is already talking about turkey hunting & taking part in the Women’s Turkey Camp at Harlan County Lake this coming Spring…
…thanks to the Baxter & Beach Families that made this hunt possible and to all the ladies that made it worthwhile…
