Family Fishing Is A Whole Lot Of Fun!
These dog days of summer make it tough to want to do anything. Some of us are well suited for fluid reduction when the temps reach 90+ and this short fat guy is no exception! However, I do like to fish during this “off season” of the summer and fish I do. It is still one of the greatest family outings you can put together and of the best “quality time” you will ever find.
My summer techniques are pretty simple (as you might have guessed) and rely on fish feeling like I do when it is hot. I look for shade and so do they. Areas of a pond with over hanging limbs, casting shade over the water, can be awesome for fish. They help hide fish and provide water without the scolding sun. Also, boat docks can be a great place to cast a dall fly or rubber worm. For kids, it is really hard to beat a 1 -2 inch piece of night crawler on a small hook with a bobber placed about 24 inches above the hook. Pinch a split shot a few inches above the hook to drop your bait and you are set. Of coure…as soon as the fish even looks at the bobber, kids want to jerk it out of the water. I usually tell them, at the first sign of a bit, to say the words “I have a big fish” and if the bobber is still under water, give it a yank. This works well plus you have the kids thinking every fish is huge (which in their eyes they are).
Don’t have fishing equipment? Can’t find worms? Not to worry, there are still a few Family Fishing Nights available for you across Nebraska. Our team brings out a huge trailer with fishing equipment for the evening and you can fish until your heart’s content. Final dates for this summer include:
