For New Shooters…Make It Fun!
Today’s youth can conquer the world, become a rock star and save damsels in distress all with a few clicks of a button so it is no wonder why they need immediate reaction and lots of fun to gain their attention. I remember my first few shooting outings as a youth and while my Dad was very safety conscious (military), I can only remember those cans exploding as I shot them out of the sky or off the saw horse. That was more than enough to keep my attention!
Well, Dave and I were at it again as we set out to create what we now refer to as “the beast” which is a gong that puts a lot of fun into shooting. This thing is huge and has that immediate “ding” sound each time you hit it which is instant gratification for those of us with short term attention capabilities. We also designed a spinner plate for 22s and that is really a hoot to watch. the larger plate was built at an angle to deflect bullets to the ground (safety and responsibility). To shoot at it from 100-200 yards with open sighted single action revolvers is just awesome! We took our nephew our (an aspiring young shooter) and we had to literally pull him away from it at the end of the day. There are many ways to practice for hunting season and have a lot of fun in the process.
This is the time to practice as the seasons are upon us and opening each month. Now….I would never even suggest a 100 yard shot at deer with an open sighted revolver but after practicing on “the beast” those 25-50 yard shots into a 10″ circle seem a whole lot easier! Now get out there and make some noise!
