OLD SCHOOL TURKEY HUNTING, HENS ARE NESTING

April 21, 2012 In The Wild 2 Comments

Nice gobbler #2 called in and bagged after dinner yesterday evening accompanied by my oldest son Zach in northern Douglas County here in Nebraska. Worked this bird with calls for some 25-30 minutes before he strutted in to within shotgun range. No blind, no decoys. Old school – camouflage clothing and and Dick Turpin box calls (www.turpincalls.com).

Me with the gobbler.

The gobbler.

In our spring wild turkey hunting area in eastern Nebraska, the hens are nesting  and are pretty much solitary at this point. That means we’ve entered what I call “that magic window” for calling in those love-struck, lonely gobblers.

If you’re a turkey hunter, time to take to your spots! Good hunting!

Nice gobbler you bagged! Great post, good photos! Fun for son Zach as well. Looks like old school still works.
