First chick hatches 5/4/2012
- 4 May 2012, 9:35 a.m. -
I reckon many of you have caught glimpses of the first chick and a broken eggshell this a.m. The female has done a very nice job positioning herself for the camera while also protecting the newbie. Furthermore, I’ve heard that the female was eating the eggshell, which Peregrines will occasionally do. In case you’ve missed a glimpse, below is a brief clip showing the apparently still wet chick and eggshell.
- 10:30 a.m. – Here is another video clip that shows the chick a bit better.
-12:00 p.m.- And, yes, one more clip when the female went to the side of the nestbox.

Joel: The adult left the nest at 12PM because both of them went after a “poor” Redtail Hawk who unsuspectingly flew too close to the Capitol tower. I witnessed them dive bombing the hawk as I left for lunch out the east doors. Glad it wasn’t me up there! RT left fairly quickly.
Cool, I missed that….but had to be cool to see.
Congrats on the first hatch!! I noticed that the nest has been moved in close to the camera. I figured the pair wanted to protect the newly-hatched birds from the weather. I also noticed the momma bird, when she was on the nest, she was busy reaching out and pulling in rocks with her beak. I supposed this is an effort to build up a nest wall for the rest of the hatchlings. Again Congrats!!
And so it begins! YAY! How cool, I have gotten to see the baby a couple times today, but only for a couple secs or so, LOL. Sorry I missed the RTH incident that would of been way cool to see. Now we wait… hoping all 4 eggs hatch out. This is a great view to watch now too so close up. Thanks to all you there who were invovled in getting the new camera installed!
It’s 9 PM Friday night. Little hard to see with the small amount of illumination from the city lights. Would be interesting to see at dawn’s first light whether there are more hatchlings to see.
Tomorrow’s max full moon should shed some night light on more hatchlings! That is if the cloud cover goes away…
Also exciting today was the rescue of an eaglet in the Central-Minnesota Bald Eagle nest cam. The parents lost a baby on Monday & their other baby was somehow caught in nesting material & almost died. Here’s an 11 min. video of the rescue:

2nd hatched at 9:20 pm Friday night…
Oh boy… got to see the 2 little hatchlings when M/D got up & flew off at ~ 6:15 a.m. CDT. Those chicks are just TOO CUTE!!
And M/D are already back with breakfast… & to watch those 2 chicks, they are obviously hungry.
Joel, can you have the IT buy (Keith??) make these comments easier & faster?
Suggestions:
1. Add an Edit function
2. Eliminate Name/Email/Website information to post comments after first approved.
3. Add a Report function to filter out trolls (trolls have become a problem at eagle sites).
Thank you to EVERYONE on the Lincoln Peregrine team that has put this nest, webcams and web sites together – including ALL those Nebraskans who made funding possible via their tax returns.

It’s now 6:28 and M/D is keeping the chicks warm & sitting on 1 egg… & just looking at the other one. Apparently M/D knows that last egg isn’t going to hatch??
Ck’d back & see now (@ 7:43) that M/D must have pulled that last egg under.
Sorry for all the posts – wish there was an Edit function & I could have put them all in my first post. ~ Moms Hugs
