Kestrels close to fledging

June 4, 2012 Nongame Bird Blog 4 Comments

So maybe you have not checked on the American Kestrels lately, but it is time to do so as they are not long for this, ahem, nestbox.   I am actually impressed this pair was able to raise six youngsters, quite a feat.    So can anyone guess how many males and how many females are in this nestbox (answer below photo).

Answer:  it is an even split, 3 and 3.  In this photos the males are the three closest to the bottom left corner.  The females are the three closest to the top right corner.  Note how the base color and barring differs between the sexes.   To see these crazy kids live, one last time, visit their webcam:

If they keep having six babies they may have to expand the house! LOL That is so awesome. I bet they will be glad to get outside and get some air :-)

Can’t get over how full the nest box is!! How are the parents able to feed them? It would have to be hot and stuffy in there. Is there a camera outside the box so we can watch them fledge??
