Elkhorn Crossing river access park reopened

Elkhorn Crossing Recreation Area, an NRD river access park near 252nd and Bennington Rd. in northwestern Douglas County has reopened. This popular riverside recreation area has been closed due to needed repair of damaged facilities caused by Elkhorn River flooding.  The public-access site features a boat ramp, improved camping facilities, new RV pads (no electrical hookups), small playground, new hand-pump well, and new restrooms. The revitalized park provides a large-group camping location for local youth, families, river float trip enthusiasts and others. No entry fee is required at Elkhorn Crossing.  Camping is also free, with a 14-day stay limit. “Camping is not available at many other river-access parks in this area,” said John Winkler, NRD General Manager.  For safety and environmental reasons, the park will be glass free.

The boat ramp will be used by many as a put-in location for float trips to other NRD river access sites at W. Maple Rd and Graske Crossing Park near W. Dodge Rd. These three sites facilitate short to moderate river float trips for tubers, canoeists, and kayakers. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds those going on float trips that they must carry a wearable, Coast Guard-approved life jacket on board their water vessels for each person and that kids 12 and under must wear their life jackets aboard those vessels. Inner tubes are considered water vessels. It is strongly suggested that all persons floating rivers wear life jackets!

Have a safe one and enjoy Elkhorn Crossing!
