Nebraska’s Ice Industry – Nebraska State Historical Society

With excessive heat warnings and advisories covering nearly half of the state of Nebraska today, keeping cool is on everyone’s minds. Back in the 1880s and 1890s there was an entire industry in the eastern part of the state built on the idea of keeping cool. Ice harvesting from rivers and lakes was a very important operation. The Nebraska ice industry provided ice for home use, for refrigerator cars of trains, and for businesses which included the meat packing plants in Omaha.
