SANDHILLS RIVERS HAVE WATER, ALWAYS!

July 13, 2012 In The Wild No Comments

I received an e-mail message this morning from Adam Switzer of Calamus Outfitters (www.calamusoutfitters.com) who outfit the scenic Calamus River near Burwell, NE.

Calamus River in Garfield County, NE looking downstream from the NE Hwy. 96 crossing.

Adam had a friendly request of me to remind all of you that the Nebraska Sandhills Rivers such as the Calamus (Burwell), the Middle Loup (Mullen), the Dismal (Mullen), the Niobrara (Valentine), etc. have plenty of water for float trips! Actually, they always do! The Sandhills Rivers are fed by seep springs and artesian wells from the large Ogallala Aquifer which means their water levels remain relatively constant year-round. So forge ahead with your float trip plans!

FYI, you can get all sorts of info at this link about water trails/river trips and outfitters: http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/trails/water.asp

Wear your life jacket, happy paddling!
