Omaha’s Purple Martin Roost

August 31, 2012 Afield and Afloat 2 Comments

Last night, I had the opportunity to view a purple martin roost in Omaha south of Farnum Street on 44th. Very neat.

It reminds me of two of the best roosts I’ve ever seen, woodducks in a cypress tree swamp near Yazoo, Mississippi and every single sunset I see during sandhill crane season in the Central Platte River Valley.

But for being close to the house, it was a pretty awesome sight, one that will be chronicled by the words and photos of freelancer Pat Mingarelli next summer in Nebraskaland Magazine. If you get a chance, visit the area over the next few nights. It will be worth the trip if you’re near the Metro.

Two words: “the bob!” succulent chicken wrapped in BACON stuffed with jalapenos.. droooooooool! They have great hot sauce for dipping if you like it even hotter! It’s pretty no frills and if it’s a cold day you’ll definitely want to leave your coat on but it’s great in the summer time! The service is decent- the guys are really good at recommending things to try and will tell you what’s especially fresh.
