EHD Continues to Kill Nebraska Deer
LINCOLN, Neb. – Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) continues to kill deer across much of Nebraska. EHD is suspected in the reported deaths of more than 2,200 deer this year.
While the disease typically occurs in low levels annually, this year’s outbreak appears to be significant, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
The total effect of the disease on the deer population will not be known until the close of the deer seasons. Biologists then will look at hunter success to determine the portion of deer mortality that may be attributed to the disease. Game and Parks encourages hunters to hunt and harvest as usual. Some hunters can expect to see fewer deer in their area this fall, where others may not notice a change. There are no plans to modify 2012 deer seasons in response to EHD losses at this time. Deer populations typically have recovered quickly following past EHD die-offs.
The viral disease is spread by biting insects called midges and usually does not persist much beyond the first frost. EHD normally occurs in late August to early September when hot and dry conditions exist that are favorable for the breeding conditions required by the midges. This year it started in mid-July.
The virus does not infect humans or pets. Humans are not at risk for handling or eating venison from infected deer or being infected by a midge. If a hunter harvests a deer that appears sick, he or she may bring the carcass to a district office or conservation officer and request revalidation of the permit.
Cattle may be infected by the biting insects; however, few will develop clinical symptoms. These symptoms may be fever, lameness or oral lesions. Producers should seek the advice of a veterinarian if they encounter these symptoms in their cattle. Deer do not transmit this disease directly to cattle.
Deer killed by EHD often are found near water and sometimes show evidence of bleeding from the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Game and Parks remains interested in determining the extent of the disease and its possible effects on the deer population. I was up to my farm which is southeast of Center,Ne and found 4 dead deer this weekend. The farm has only 240 acres,I didn’t do a real search of the farm to see how many have died. One had died right on the farmstead next to the buildings. My wife now is wondering if the deer are safe to eat when you get them during hunting season? Should I report these deaths to the local game warden?

I understand that the disease cannot be transmitted to humans, but wouldn’t the quality of the meat of a deer be considerably diminished due to excess stress, malnourishment, dehydration, etc. caused by the disease?
on one farm i hunt i found two dead does and one buck on another i found two dead bucks both farms r on the platte in merric co.
Personally i have seen 11, 2 does and 9 bucks in boyd county.
I have also heard local reports of about 90 more ranging from 6-40.

Mule deer are more resistant to EHD than whitetail deer.
Why are Mule deer more resistant to EHD than the whitetails?
Many species get EHD. In Kansas, two subspecies of white-tailed deer react differently to EHD. The biology of animals is so different that different animal’s immune systems can handle diseases differently. In short, we don’t really know. The science logic behind it is poorly understood at this time. Great question.
If the deer die in a pond and have been laying there several weeks due to ehd, will every deer that currently drinks out of that pond get ehd as well?
No. EHD is transmitted by a midge/gnat.
im a little worried about the population the flies i think have died by know but i think population is really gnna be low because know rifle muzzle loader is coming bowhunters isnt much of a threat though AND make sure you are going to harvest the deer and actually eat it dont waste non of it!
