EHD Report- The Weekend

September 24, 2012 Afield and Afloat 2 Comments

Last Thursday, while in the field near Tekamah, my hunting group saw 11 deer, a standard if not slightly increased number from what we normally see. When we asked a couple of local farmers what they had seen while combining, they reported seeing no dead deer on their lands.

On Friday, I saw my first EHD deer, an infected whitetail at Two Rivers SRA. Soon after finishing off the deer, researcher Pat Molini removed its lymph nodes just to confirm the virus in this animal. Also on Friday, the NGPC recommended cooperation between landowners and hunters and reductions in deer permits. Read the entire news release here.

On Saturday, I got a report from a landowner near Springfield saying he had found the second dead deer on his place and his trail camera photos, which are usually plentiful at this time of year, are barely firing a shot.

Lastly, on Sunday I was hunting near Louisville and my father and I saw no deer, but we did find the remains of at least one whitetail near the fields we were hunting.

If you have any additional reports, post them here.

In Cass county we’ve found around 6 dead deer in the past month. We wern’t even looking hard though, so obviously there were more. Saw a small doe that was infected too. Sad to see for us hunters.

It is sad to see, but I had a report from a landowner near Springfield yesterday that said he saw 12 LIVE deer on his place (he’s found 2 dead ones himself).

I also saw a few deer in bean fields outside of Lincoln yesterday, feeding in fields where I typically see them each year at this time.

      It was nice to see.
