Hunting Off Of the Mayan Calendar
It was bound to happen! Sooner or later we would simply run out of days. I remember a grade school teacher mentioning something about the end of the world in 2012. An now…here we are. How the Mayans had such divine insight I will never know but it seems to be a topic with many that because their calendar ends on December 21, 2012 so does the world. So tomorrow will be our first official day of hunting off the Mayan calendar since civilization began. Scary!
If you listen to some, things are sure to change tomorrow. Waterfowl will fly north instead of south for the winter. Deer won’t lose their antlers in the spring. As for the upcoming squirrel rut that many of us have been waiting for? You can forget about that. In fact, I wouldn’t even look for the cranes to return this spring.
Not being superstitious, I have enjoyed the Mayan mayham but will awake tomorrow in time for a mid morning squirrel hunt. I will still expect them to live in trees just as they did off the “old” calendar. In fact, I bet the snow will still be on the ground. I’m sure the Mayans didn’t mean for the world to end when they stopped making calendar dates. In fact, you might assume that at some point, their calendar maker simply got tired of printing dates. Give him credit…he made it quite a few years. Heck, even our NEBRASKAland team knows the future as they have been making calendars for years. In fact, they even made a 2013 calendar that is loaded with spectacular outdoor photography you can by online. They wouldn’t mislead us with faulty dates would they? I wonder what they know that we don’t? Maybe our Editor Doug Carroll has some sort of Mayan insight or found lost calendar dates. In either case…our calendar is printed so tomorrow can not be the end of the world.
Knowing we are here for some time longer…we have decisions to make. I think it is time to start chasing squirrels as the rut is on! Also, keep an eye on the weather as I think more geese are heading our way over the next several days and that action should be good. We even have some deer hunting left to do. Time to pull out your cold weather gear and tactics. I’m heading out tomorrow in chase of squirrel. Probably take the single action 22 pistol. Kinda scary though, knowing that from this day forward, we’re on our own calendar now. Doug I hope you got the dates right!
