Trout Unlimited Banquet

February 4, 2013 Barbs and Backlashes 2 Comments

Just a quick blog post today, a reminder of the Trout Unlimited Nebraska banquet coming up this Saturday evening.

If you believe in trout and the habitats in which they are found, and who doesn’t?, plan to be there!  There will be lots of raffle prizes and auction items, and a bunch of folks who like to fish and talk about it!  This is an important fund-raiser for TU Nebraska.  Contact information is listed on the poster or go to TU Nebraska’s website, http://www.tu710.org/ .  See you there!

I have just moved to Ogallala, NE I have a 7 year old grandson that is absolutely nuts about fishing of any type he will be with me the second week of March. Would you have any recommendations for where to take him fishing. This kid has the fishing bug worse than anyone I have ever met, he practices casting all the time with a spinning reel and all he ever wants for Christmas/birthdays is fishing gear. He is even happy if we go fishing and don’t catch anything ( he has more patience than I do). Thank you for any advice.

      Dave,

Second week of March, Ogallala? One of the best places in the entire state that I could think of for fishing that time of year would be Lake Ogallala. That fishery is one of the best rainbow trout fisheries anywhere right now. You can catch trout, and maybe some big trout, out of Lake Ogallala itself, or the canal or short stretch of the North Platte River just below Lake Ogallala.

Something else you might try in early spring there is some catfishing on the west end of Lake McConaughy. The channel cats like to feed on baitfish that died during the winter, look for wind-swept shorelines where some of those dead baitfish might pile up. In fact if you find some dead baitfish on the shoreline, use them for bait or you might be able to get some shad strips at a local bait shop.

Those are a couple of quick ideas for you, let me know if you have more questions or need more information.

      Daryl B.
