EHD-What I’ve Seen and Heard

As far as what I’ve seen, or haven’t seen, deer numbers are definitely down. Yesterday afternoon was the third time I’ve been to one of my spots in Cass County and have yet to see a deer. However, on my way home I did see 3 on my trek back …

More Rules You Can Only Learn in Nature

From reader Brian Carlin: 1) Always carry an extra boat plug in the truck or in your tackle box; 2) Keep a coat hanger in the boat. An unwound hanger can help retrieve lures just under the water but not with in reach.  A one inch snip of the wire can also double as …

Rules You Can Only Learn in Nature – No. 1

Never leave a stringer of fish in the water at a pond where snapping turtles are present. Unless you want your stringer of fish to be gone when you return from a lunch break. Send me any “Rules” you’ve learned while afield, for I know you have some of your …

Journal Star EHD Update

More EHD information can be found in my Lincoln Journal Star article here.  Also, while I saw no deer on my last hunting trip near Springfield, the landowner saw multiple deer, including three bucks, on the other side of his property. I also had my first near collision this morning …

Hunting near EHD

I’m hunting this afternoon on land where two dead deer have been found and game camera images have gone from plentiful to pitiful. But it’s a beautiful spot, beautiful (albeit warm) day, and I’m very excited. Will update you tonight or tomorrow on how the evening goes. If you are …

A Froggy Experiment

Until now when blogging from the field I have either used photos from my camera phone or downloaded images later. Today, however, I began a new experiment of taking photos directly from my Nebraskaland slr camera and placing them in a blog. I hope you enjoy my first effort. JK

EHD Report- The Weekend

Last Thursday, while in the field near Tekamah, my hunting group saw 11 deer, a standard if not slightly increased number from what we normally see. When we asked a couple of local farmers what they had seen while combining, they reported seeing no dead deer on their lands. On …

EHD Where I Hunt

I hunted opening morning (near Tekamah) and yesterday afternoon (near Springfield), and our group has seen a total of 20 deer thus far – more  than we saw during our first two hunts last year. Now, I did see a yearling by itself yesterday in a place where the landowner has found one …

A Very Successful Start

After about an hour blood trail, my dad, Matt Marx, and I found Matt’s first archery deer. Congrats to Matt and his first bow buck. Send me your opening day photos at Jeff.kurrus@nebraska.gov and I’ll post them here.

8:00 AM Archery Report

12 dove, 8 turkeys, 4 squirrels, 2 raccoons, and 1 pass through for my hunting partner. Hunting near Tekamah today and it couldn’t be a more perfect morning. More soon after he tracks down his deer. JK
