Dinosaurs in the Forest

I had the opportunity yesterday to visit Fontenelle Forest’s dinosaur exhibit. Very cool to see dinosaurs to scale in the woods. All displays are accessible by a wooden foot path. Visit Fontenelle’s web site for more information.

Omaha’s Purple Martin Roost

Last night, I had the opportunity to view a purple martin roost in Omaha south of Farnum Street on 44th. Very neat. It reminds me of two of the best roosts I’ve ever seen, woodducks in a cypress tree swamp near Yazoo, Mississippi and every single sunset I see during …

Revenge of the Frog

Now this is something that should have 10 million hits. My daughter will love this when she sees it. RevengeoftheFrog.wmvwol The worst part is the guy acting like the frog is an alligator. JK

Good Eats

I’m looking for good hole-in-the-wall places to eat throughout the state. From fried chicken in Valparaiso to the hamburgers at Bob’s Bar in Martinsburg. Tell me yours, and I promise not to share it with anyone else. Really, I promise. JK

In Search of the Northwest School of Taxidermy

In the November issue of Nebraskaland, Jon Farrar will be chronicling some of the history of this former Omaha school. And what many of you have figured out through the years is that Farrar is a diligent researcher, and trying to debunk his historical writings is a very difficult task. …

Photo of the Week – The Prairie Ecologist

Ornate box turtles are a common sight in the Nebraska sandhills, but are less common in other parts of the state.  You can read more and see a full-sized photo here: http://prairieecologist.com/2012/08/24/photo-of-the-week-august-24-2012/

EHD Questions

There’s been a lot of talk about EHD lately, the deer-killing disease that is spread by biting insects and occurs during the driest part of the year. Well, since this year has been one of the driest on record throughout much of Nebraska, the disease hit a bit sooner and …

Welcome to Afield and Afloat
