Trout Bums

I have a nephew that is a trout bum.  I say that with complete respect, pride and a little bit of jealousy.  He is guiding fishermen on the Nushagak River in Alaska as I write this.  Before he headed north for the summer he posted this poster on his FaceBook …

Carp-O-Rama

I believe it has been about 7 years ago that we started this little “Carp-O-Rama” event out at Pawnee Reservoir northwest of Lincoln.  We wanted an event to draw some attention to common carp, a fish worthy of pursuit, a fish that is definitely a challenge to catch and a …

71.6 on your radio dial–All Flatheads All the Time!

Southeast Nebraska fisheries biologists have been doing some extra sampling and work with flathead catfish in Branched Oak Reservoir for the past several years.  Please take some time to review a couple of previous blog posts about that work, http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/blogs/2010/08/flathead-tagging/ , http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/blogs/2011/07/field-work/ .  This year that has been taken to …

Father’s Day 2012

I do not always remember to post something for Father’s Day or Mother’s Day, but I have remembered both holidays this year.  For Father’s Day let me dig back through the old photo albums, show you some old pictures and tell you a couple of stories. Here is one of …

Sneakers and Guarders

As you can imagine we have a bunch of NEBRASKAland calendars hanging around the office, http://shopoutdoornebraska.ne.gov/AspDotNetStorefront/p-971-2012-nebraskaland-calendar.aspx .  Here is a scan of Eric Fowler’s bluegill picture which is the image for June 2012. Who says fish do not have personalities? I got to looking at all those calendar photos around …

Burchard Update

I want to give you a quick update on the Burchard Lake project.  Most probably already know, but in case you do not, Burchard Reservoir in southeast Nebraska, one of the best fisheries in the state, needed some repairs this year.  The outlet structure there was very old, leaked, and …

“What a Wonderful World”

I blog about Nebraska, fish and fishing most all of the time.  But, if you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know that especially on Fridays I might throw something up just for the fun of it.  The video that follows has absolutely nothing to do with Nebraska, …

Nebraska High School Fishing

Here is a relatively new program many of us would like to see “take off”.  You can expect me to at least occasionally blog about this because I want to keep giving it some publicity. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) is committed to increasing opportunities for Nebraska youth …

Some Upcoming Events

Quick blog post for today:  I know of a couple of events coming up this weekend that you might be interested in. First is a fishing tournament.  Now, I have not nor will I do a bunch of advertising of fishing tournaments here on my blog.  I do not need …

Safe Boating

OK, I realize I missed National Safe Boating week without my usual blog post about wearing your life jacket.  If you want to hear me harp on that subject, again, please go back and read this past blog post and watch the videos, http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/blogs/2011/05/national-safe-boating-week-2/ .  I know this is a message …
