Fall Trout Stockings

Waters are cooling and in most parts of the state they are cool enough that we can begin stocking catchable, 10-inch rainbow trout in a number of urban and parks waters across the state.  Let me emphasize that the schedule I am about to give is tentative; it is the …

I can feel it!

OK, if you have been reading my blog, by now you should know that most everything swimming around in my head relates to fish.  I have no idea what this song is supposed to be about, doubt if Phil Collins even fishes, but over the years it has been my …

Data, data, data

Pointy-headed fisheries biologists live on data.  If you hang out with a bunch of us as we “talk shop” you will hear about PSD’s, RSD’s, Wr’s, CPUE’s, length at age, length frequency distributions, and much more boring “stuff”.  You will probably see lots and lots of graphs, pointy-heads love graphs! …

Ponca Expo

This past weekend was the 7th annual Missouri River Outdoor Expo held at Ponca State Park.  I am embarrassed to tell you that this was the first year I was there to see it.  My wife and I spent some time seeing all the sights at the Expo yesterday, and …

Waterproof cameras

If you have been reading my blog for any time you know I love fish pictures.  I love “hero shots” of folks holding big fish (yes, they are even better if I am the one holding the fish)!  The best photos are the ones taken on the water, quickly snapped …

Optimal Foraging Theory

I have a buddy with whom I have spent some time fishing and a lot of time sharing ideas.  He once said, “Fishing is mostly about understanding fish”.  I liked that quote so much, that I wrote it down when he said it.  Thanks Bruce.  Right now you might want …

Last blog post I had some updates on the Missouri River flooding.  This one I have some updates on one of our Nebraska reservoirs.  Red Willow north of McCook has been at minimum pool for going on two years now.  A couple of years ago there were some “cracks”, gullies, …

Some Missouri River Updates

By now I am sure everyone is aware of the historic flooding that was experienced on the Missouri River this year.  I am also sure you are going to hear a lot of discussions on how water levels were managed and how they will be managed in the future.  Believe …

Hillbilly Handfishing

Alright, I have to admit it, Animal Planet TV has a new show called “Hillbilly Handfishing” and I do not believe I have missed an episode yet, http://animal.discovery.com/tv/hillbilly-handfishin/ .  Judging from the phone calls I have received about hand-fishing or “noodling” since this show went on-air, I am sure there are …

Nebraska High School State Fishing Championship Results

A couple of weeks ago I told you about he Nebraska High School State Fishing Championship that was held at Maranatha Lake east of North Platte, http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/blogs/2011/08/nebraska-high-school-fishing-state-championship/ .  That championship was held this past Saturday and I have some results and photos to share with you. There were five teams …
