Don’t believe everything you read on the internet

I hear lots of things from lots of people; listen to rumors and misinformation all the time.  When I was asked about “sandhills shiners” the other day, I was thrown for a loop.  I was told that sandhill shiners were a rare minnow species found only in the rivers and …

No, I have not quit fishing

It has been some time since I posted any fishing reports.  If you have been reading my blog for awhile you know that I fish 12 months out of the year, every year, but I have to confess there are other distractions in the spring.  I absolutely love spring turkey …

Weekend update, May 2, 2011

I had a busy weekend, a working weekend, and want to share with you some of the things I was privileged to do this weekend. The first thing I will tell you about was the meeting of the Sioux Land Fly Fishers, http://www.siouxlandflyfishing.com/index.htm .  I know one of their members …

2011 Pallid Sturgeon Broodstock Collections

Speaking of volunteers . . . we have a bunch of folks who help collect pallid sturgeon broodstock every spring.  Pallid sturgeon are listed as “endangered” both in Nebraska and federally and there are a lot of efforts ongoing to learn as much as possible about pallid sturgeon in Nebraska’s …

Outdoor Discovery Program

I spent a couple days last week helping at our Outdoor Discovery Program at Platte River State Park.  What is an “Outdoor Discovery Program”?  Well, it is a couple days of hands-on activities designed to get kids outside and to introduce them to Nebraska’s natural resources and outdoor recreation!  You …

Daniel Scores!

Just a quick update here this morning; shaping up to be a busy week again this week.  We are into that spring period where I wish I could make the clock stop–in the next few weeks there will be so many things to enjoy in our Nebraska outdoors that I …

I am a steward!

I guess that tomorrow, April 22 is “Earth Day”.  If you have been reading my blog for a year, you might remember the skepticism and cynicism with which I greeted last year’s “Earth Day”, http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/blogs/2010/04/earth-day/ .  I am not sure there has been much to change my attitude this year, …

Can you feel me now?

From time to time I have been known to give seminars on catching various species of fish; usually walleyes, but other species too.  In those seminars I try to take a pointy-headed fisheries biologist approach to fishing because that is one way I may be able to tell folks some …

Blinded Me with Science–April 18, 2011

I will use the Thomas Dolby reference again (http://s0.ilike.com/play#Thomas+Dolby:She+Blinded+Me+With+Science:37316:s92698.9636634.13272379.0.2.90%2Cstd_2b8d7a7e3ee448a7b9a747dca648c456) to tell you about some of the fisheries research going on in Nebraska.  Actually during the winter I attended a couple of meetings of fisheries professionals.  One of those was our Nebraska Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (http://www.nebraskaafs.org/index.html), and the other …
