Description: Slender, smooth-skinned fish having one large barbel in middle of lower jaw, a rounded tail fin, and two dorsal fins. It is the only species of cod that occurs in freshwater. Secretive fish which occupies similar habitat as eels (piles of rock, submerged logs, and undermined bridge supports). Young primarily consume aquatic insect larvae while adults mainly eat fish and crayfish. Spawns during the winter. Rarely caught by anglers.
