Sledding at Mahoney Park

Photos and text by Doug Carroll

Matt Werner of Lincoln holds on as he goed downhill on a sunny winter day at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park near Ashland at Interstate 80 exit 426.

In winter Eugene T. Mahoney State Park trades in its green and brown dress of spring and summer for a fresh suit of white. And with it, the park's slopes lose their stubborn friction and become slick roller coasters, beckoning a colorful carnival of sliders and sledders intent on escaping winter's doldrums.

Kara Pogreba of Lincoln looks for a soft landing spot after her attempt to use her sled as a snowboard goes awry.

Mahoney Park offers three designated toboggan and sled runs equipped with snow cannons to add a man-made layer to the slopes when Mother Nature turns fickle. Rental sleds and toboggans are available for visitors who need a ride. The park's craft center, located next to the runs, is a great place to warm up while enjoying a cup of hot cocoa.

The sledding season at Mahoney usually opens with the first significant snowfall. A park permit is required for vehicles entering the park. For information about snow conditions, special events and park amenities call (402) 944-2523.
