Temporary Park Closures - FAQ
The Nebraska Game and Parks Board of Commissioners announced on Aug. 30 the temporary closure of all services and vehicle access to a number of state recreation areas (SRA) and state historical parks (SHP).
The purpose of the closures is to redirect Game and Parks staff from the closed areas in an effort to reduce the more than $30 million of identified deferred maintenance needs of an aging Nebraska State Park System and meet compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and environmental requirements.

Firewood Alert - Help Prevent Emerald Ash Borers in Nebraska
Voluntary Firewood Restriction
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a serious pest that is near Nebraska’s border. Your cooperation is needed to help prevent EAB from invading Nebraska woodlands and landscapes.
If you have brought firewood from another state, please burn it immediately and DO NOT transport it to another location. In addition to the Voluntary Firewood Restriction a Voluntary Firewood Exchange is in affect at Niobrara SP, Ponca SP, E.T. Mahoney SP, Indian Cave SP and Pawnee SRA.
If you have brought firewood from another state, you will be asked to exchange it for locally acquired firewood at the park office or Campground Host. Information about the exchange location and related information can be obtained at the park offices for your location.
If you need additional firewood, your options are:
- Purchase firewood at parks that sell it.
- Purchase firewood at vendors near many parks
- Gather dead firewood laying on the ground within park boundaries.
