Trek the
Cowboy Trail - Discover Nebraska
Attention Trail Users:
The Cowboy Trail from Norfolk to O’Neill is now open
Flooding on the Elkhorn River in 2010 damaged 22 of 73 miles of the Cowboy Trail between Norfolk and O’Neill. There are three areas that remain closed until further notice due to safety concerns and this map includes alternate routes in those areas indicated by a dotted line. Please ZOOM in on the map to get the detail you need.
The alternate routes will be on-street, so rules of the road apply when riding those routes. There is rough surfacing on certain sections and those areas are identified on the map.
Additionally, resurfacing work in 2012 will close short trail segments for intermittent periods of time.
Experience the nation’s longest rails-to-trail trek along the northern tier of Nebraska. You can hike, bike, or horseback ride a total of 195 miles on completed trail from Norfolk to Valentine. Enjoy the small towns along the way, beautiful scenery and pristine air on the Cowboy Trail.
