Trails - Snowmobile Areas

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission does not allow most OHV use at areas owned or operated by the Commission. There are some exceptions to this. Snowmobiling is allowed at the areas below under certain conditions.

ATVs and snowmobiles are allowed on frozen (8 inches thick) lake surfaces at the following areas:

• Bluestem State Recreation Area (SRA)
• Box Butte SRA
• Branched Oak SRA
• Calamus SRA
• Conestoga SRA
• Enders SRA
• Fremont Lakes SRA
• Gallagher Canyon SRA
• Johnson Lake SRA
• Lake McConaughy SRA
• Lake Maloney SRA
• Lake Minatare SRA
• Lake Ogallala SRA
• Lewis and Clark SRA
• Louisville SRA
• Olive Creek SRA
• Oliver Reservoir SRA
• Pawnee SRA
• Rockford SRA
• Sherman Reservoir SRA
• Stagecoach SRA
• Summit Lake SRA
• Sutherland Reservoir SRA
• Swanson Reservoir SRA
• Wagon Train SRA
• Walgren Lake SRA
• Willow Creek SRA

When there is a minimum of 6 inches of snow on the ground, Branched Oak SRA and Lewis and Clark SRA both offer 5 miles of trails for snowmobiling. Niobrara State Park offers approximately 2 miles of trails to ride. If riding at a Commission area, the snowmobile must be registered and must have a valid park entry permit affixed to the vehicle.

Registering Your Snowmobile
It is required that a snowmobile be registered if the vehicle is used outside of land owned or leased by the operator of the vehicle. Find more information on registering a snowmobile.

Nebraska Snowmobile Trail Fund
When a person registers their snowmobile, 75 percent of the fee is deposited in the Nebraska Snowmobile Trail Cash Fund. These funds then can be used by the Commission to lease or purchase property for snowmobiles; for planning, establishing, marking, operating, maintaining and enforcing these snowmobile trails. It can also be used for matching funds for other trail grants by the Commission.
