Conservation Programs for Pheasants

Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) - a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) program protecting erodible and sensitive farmland with permanent cover, also providing for filter strips and streamside buffers to enhance wildlife habitat and water quality; 10-15 year contracts, land rental payments and cost-share incentives available. CRP Management Access Program (CRP-MAP) - a joint Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) and Pheasants Forever (PF) program to enhance wildlife habitat on existing CRP fields and provide hunting access; payments of $1-to-$5 per acre per year available, depending on habitat quality and extent of management. Contact NGPC.

Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) - a USDA program to restore, protect and manage wildlife habitat on private lands; for use on native habitats, converted cropland and pastureland. Contact Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) or NGPC.

Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) - USDA program for wetland restoration and protection; provides 10-year rental agreements or 30-year to perpetual commitments with up to 100% cost-share for restoration and future management activities. Contact NRCS or NGPC.

Wetland Initiative Program (WIP) - NGPC program for wetland management and enhancement; 10 year to perpetual commitments with up to 100% cost-share. Contact NGPC

Wild Nebraska - NGPC, in partnership with Natural Resources Districts (NRDs), provide incentives to manage or restore grasslands, wetlands and woodlands via Wheat Stubble Management and Technical Assistance programs. Contact NGPC or NRDs.

Corners For Wildlife Program - PF, NGPC, NRDs , Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund (NETF) provide landowners cost share assistance and rental payments to establish wildlife habitat on corners of center pivot irrigation or other fields. Contact NRDs, PF, NGPC.

Wildlife Habitat Seed - PF offers sources of seed for grass, legume, wildflower and food plots at discounted rates. Contact PF at www.NebraskaPF.com or call (308) 754-5339.

Technical Assistance - PF and NGPC wildlife biologists in various NRCS field offices and USDA service centers assist landowners in developing wildlife plans and enrolling in USDA and NGPC conservation programs. Contact NGPC or PF.

Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) - USDA program to protect native, fragile or otherwise important grasslands. Perpetual easements and 10, 20 and 30 year agreements are available as well as cost-sharing for management. Contact NRCS.

Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) - USDA program with incentives to manage ag lands for various conservation purposes, including wildlife habitat. Cost share and technical assistance available from NRCS.

Conservation Security Program (CSP) - new USDA program that provides incentives for conservation measures to benefit natural resources, including wildlife; currently restricted to Little Blue NRD, but is expected to be expanded. Contact: NRCS.

Pheasants Forever chapter programs - all 59 PF chapters raise and use money locally on private land to establish wildlife habitat.
