A Legacy Tier 1 at-risk species

In 2001, the U.S. Congress created the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program (WCRP) and State Wildlife Grants Program (SWG) to address the needs of declining fish and wildlife and prevent future endangered species listings. The US Fish and Wildlife Service distributes funding to state wildlife agencies using a formula based on population (2/3) and land area (1/3). SWG funds are used in each state to implement their Wildlife Action Plan. For more information about the federal State Wildlife Grant program, visit the Teaming With Wildlife website.

Since 2002, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has opted to make a portion of its annual allocation available to partners through a competitive grants program. The Commission has awarded over $3 million in grants to conservation partners and universities to conserve and study at-risk species and their habitats.

Projects have occurred on the properties of more than 500 private landowners as well as land managed by state and federal agencies and non-profit conservation organizations.Thirty of the state's Biologically Unique Landscapes and many of their associated at-risk species and natural communities have benefited from such projects.

Because of recent federal budget cuts to the State Wildlife Grants Program, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is unable to offer competitive grants until further notice.
